Your front door makes a statement about your home, so you want to choose one that is inviting, works well in your climate and fits the personality of your home and your budget.

    • And entrance door can be as ornate or as simple as you choose.

    • First, determine the style and type of door that works best for your home.

    • Nothing compares with the beauty and richness of wood. Whether a solid door or one with glass inserts (figure A), wood makes a dramatic statement. But wood can be slightly more expensive than other materials, requires protection from weather and periodic maintenance.

    • Wood composite doors (figure B) offer a low-maintenance alternative that deliver excellent performance and can withstand nearly any kind of weather.

    • Fiberglass doors provide dependable protection from the elements and come in a variety of affordable and durable styles.

    • And if strength, low maintenance and cost-efficiency is what you're looking for, you might want to consider a steel door.

    • Most doors come in many sizes, designs and a variety of options including decorative glass, transoms and complementary sidelights, which can dramatically enhance and brighten your entry area.

When selecting interior doors, again choose a style that fits your home and your objectives.

    • Molded doors (figure C) are one of the most popular. They're stylish, durable, versatile and great for almost any room.

    • Upgrade to a solid-core option to reduce sound transmission.

    • Molded mirror doors are perfect in the bathroom and bedroom.

    • Molded bifolds (figure D) are popular for closets and laundry rooms. Bifolds are also available in wood.

    • Flush doors are lightweight, economical and come in a variety of wood finishes, while solid wood is distinctive and can be customized.
