Wooden crates, painted and custom-decorated by kids, make for a fun and effective means for taming those out-of-control toy collections.
Decorating expert Nancy Golden offers a quick-tip for making kids' toy-storage containers by letting kids decorate their own wooden crates. Getting the kids themselves involved in making these fun containers may even help motivate them to put their toys away. Well, at least it's worth a try!

Plain, unfinished crates (figure A) can be purchased from craft stores and cost very little.
Spread newspaper or a drop-cloth onto your floor, and let the kids have fun decorating their own crates with paint, markers, stencils and stickers.
Other supplies to have on hand are paintbrushes, paint-pens, washable glue and decorative objects to glue on (figure B).
Crates are stackable (figure C) and ideal for storing toys and arranging collections.
