Michele Beschen is rolling up the floor and putting a candle in the middle. The B. Original host puts a new twist on classic tile mosaics in this project, creating a mosaic candle holder with no mastic, no grout and no mess. She does it by using mosaic tiles on a mesh backing. The mesh and the framework underneath let the candle's light flicker through for a warm, subtle effect. Scroll down to see this easy B. Original how-to, and get started on your own rustic stone candle holders.
Mosaic Tile Candle HolderMaterials: 12" x 12" sheet of mosaic tiles with mesh backing clear silicone caulk hardware cloth tin snips or heavy-duty shears thin aluminum wire painter's tape or masking tape large pieces of broken tile or slate
- Lay one 12" x 12" sheet of mosaic tiles face down on the work surface. Reinforce the tiles by applying a touch of silicone caulk on the back of each tile. Let dry completely.
- Use tin snips or heavy-duty shears to cut a piece of hardware cloth just slightly smaller than the sheet of tiles.
- Roll the hardware cloth into a cylinder. Close up the cylinder by stitching or tying with aluminum wire or with the loose wires left over from cutting the hardware cloth (figure A).
- Gently wrap the tile around the hardware cloth cylinder (figure B).
- Run a line of silicone along the edge where the tile edges will connect (figure C). Connect the edges.
Wrap painter's tape or masking tape around the tile sheet to hold it while it dries (figure D). To further reinforce the cylinder, tie a small wire through the tile mesh and the hardware cloth (figure E). Let the cylinder dry completely before removing the tape.To display, set the cylinder on a piece of slate or tile, place a candle or small light inside and top it off with another piece of slate or tile.
